BOOM! My favourite quiz is back on tonight. Don’t miss Only Connect on BBC 2 at 8:30pm!
The show has a similar difficulty to University Challenge, but without a complete and utter cock-womble of a host: Paxman should really think about retiring to the pit of putrefied filth he crawled out of … Sorry, I got distracted by my rage … Talking of hosts, Victoria Coren Mitchell – who will be my wife one day, when I can find a way to humanely dispose of her husband David Mitchell – hosts the show and without her it would simply be another boring, over-intellectualised quiz that the members of your school’s debate team put on when they're bored. She is warm, humorous, sarcastic and never afraid to roast herself. She is the heart and soul of the show.
Victoria Coren Mitchell’s brilliance shouldn’t take away from the contestants who are invariably loveable geniuses who know things that I will never know even if I ate the entire internet. Because of the format where teams will be on more than one episode you will grow to have favourites and be able to root for them … sort of like picking your favourite football team, but for clever people.
The quiz itself is quite hard to explain, but revolves around the contestants (in teams of three) finding connections between ‘seemingly random clues’. These clues take various forms involving pictures, sounds, words, and numbers. It may sound simple, but trust me, you’ll be lucky if you get 5 questions right across the whole series … and that’s after you’ve overheard a clue from the team’s deliberations.
Sit down with a bottle of wine (apparently it helps with diabetes now, or something … as if you need an excuse) and give it a go. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
